Welcome!

What is the Youth Summit?

The Youth Summit is a free online one-day event bringing together sixth-form and college students, aged 16-18, from around the country to discuss and debate the topics of the Christmas Lectures. This year’s Youth Summit will take place on Friday 16 October 2020 using the I’m a Scientist online platform.

The event will cover themes of sustainability, science, society, and empowerment across the topics of planet Earth and our oceans, atmosphere, and the geology.

Who is the event for?

This event is ideal for any student with interests across the sciences, social sciences, and humanities, giving them a fun and educationally enriching opportunity as they engage in text-only peer-to-peer debates with other young people.

Teachers should consider prioritising students who are currently studying STEM subjects who would benefit from an online peer-to-peer debating experience.

We encourage schools to prioritise Pupil Premium students where possible.

Lisa Derry Introduces the Summit

Hello I’m Lisa and welcome to the Royal Institution

While we’re sad we can’t do this in person, we’re looking forward to welcoming you to our digital Youth Summit on 16 October.

Using a combination of videos and text based chat-rooms, you will have the chance to discuss and debate our shared futures with students from around the UK

The Youth Summit is based on this year’s Christmas Lectures, bringing in themes of sustainability, science, society and empowerment.

At the end of the day, we’ll collect your discussions and viewpoints and feed them back to this year’s Christmas Lecturers. We’ll be sharing your insights on these important themes.

The platform is designed to be self-explanatory. We’ll have moderators and guests on hand to help you if you need it, made obvious by their different coloured profiles.

The platform will be open from 9.45am with the day starting promptly at 10am. It’s really important we get your input and involvement throughout the whole day. It might seem quite long, but we’ve timetabled plenty of breaks to rest and recharge in between each session.

Before the day itself, make sure you’ve filled out your profile. Some of the information will be filled out on the day, so don’t worry if you can’t do it just yet. Your teachers can contact us if you’re having any issues with this.

You’ll need to read our code of conduct so we can ensure a respectful, safe and welcoming environment. You’ve also been sent materials to read that will make you more familiar with the subjects we’ll be discussing.

That’s all from me for now. Thank you for signing up and we look forward to welcoming you to this year’s Royal Institution Youth Summit.

Now where should I go?
