The matrix
Where are you when it comes to the future?
Below you will find a powerful tool that will help you reflect on the way you think about, and to challenge you and your fellow delegate’s assumptions about the future. Is it inevitable or can we still have an effect on how it unfolds?
Horizontal line on the matrix
How uncertain do we perceive the future to be?
Place yourself at the left side of the line if you think the future is still open to change and is therefore undetermined.
Alternatively, choose the right side if you are certain of what the future is going to be. This can be any type of future as long as you have a strong idea of what it might be.Vertical line on the matrix
How far do we see our responses to the future being in our own hands or in the hands of others?
Place yourself at the top of the line if you think you have control and the responsibility for the future is in your own hands.
Alternatively, choose the bottom of the line if you think you don’t have control and the future will be up to others.Combine your answers
After choosing one option from both the horizontal and vertical line, you will end up in one of the four quadrants on the matrix. Each quadrant will relate to one of the four icons available for your profile picture. For example, if you choose an uncertain future, and you think others are in control of the future, you will have chosen the ‘sad’ face.Head back to your profile page and change your profile picture to the choice you made on the matrix. On the day of the event, your choices will lead you into a chat-room where you can discuss your choice with other delegates.
About your choices:
Building Site
You see yourself leaving school or university in a climate of significant uncertainty about what the future might bring, but who see yourself as having the resources to shape your personal success and survival in those unknown futures.
Route Map
You see yourself leaving school and imagining a future that seems to be heading in a particular direction. You’re responsible for determining your response to that future, for pushing it along, for opting out, for seeking to resist it. You might have the resources and tools to work within or against an existing vision of what future success will look like.
Carried Along
You see yourself leaving school or college with a strong vision of what the future will bring but with no sense of the ability to influence your role in that future. This might bring despair to you if you feel you have few resources to shape your life and may see your future taking a negative path, or comfort to you if your future is already mapped out and well resourced.
Into the Mist
You see yourself as having no sense of how you might influence your own future but also a sense that the contexts in which you’re operating might change at any time.
