Grey Future Video

Hello comrades. My story of the future comes from a time where we are all equal. Around the year 2035, society was getting sick of the large businesses and corporations that were ruining the planet – you do realise it was only about 100 businesses that produced the most carbon emissions, right? They only cared about the money. And it was expensive to save the planet, so they just refused to do anything.

After months of radical protests and mass gatherings that resulted in a power change in many governments across the globe, we decided to just get rid of money. Yes, you heard me right! There’s no more working for a pay-check or trying to get that nice new car. Money no longer rules the world. Instead, everything is shared out equally between people all over the planet. Kind of…
Because of course, there are issues – who gets to decide what is ‘equal’? I sometimes wonder if we are all equal…

We are very proud of the new clothing material we use – a special version of bamboo cloth that is very eco-friendly and sustainable. We can compost old material and feed it to our pigs, and there is much less waste produced in the making – not like the old days when 8,000 litres of water was wasted for every pair of jeans made! Of course, we started wearing material made from pineapple waste a few years ago, but the biggest pineapple growers created a monopoly and tried to charge the rest of the world for it – that’s right, they tried to reinstate money into our system! Even though they said that they would spread the money fairly, we could clearly see they were keeping most of it so no one trusted them and we had to switch to materials that we could all grow in our local communities along with the food we grow. We have 3 different patterns we are allowed to make our clothes from – this is the rule, so fashion is eliminated. Fashion has been banned because it is not sustainable to be fashionable and changing your clothes every season! We’re not even allowed to use dyes, so all our clothes look grey.

I had a friend in our village who tried to develop her own clothes dyes. She even set up a stall next to the town hall to exchange the clothes she was producing for other goods. It was so much fun while it lasted… but she should have known better, should have known that the state wouldn’t allow it. Now she’s been relocated somewhere far away, and I don’t think I’ll see her again.

Of course, many talk about the ‘good old days’ when we had universities and cutting edge technologies. I never understood why it was so important to cut edges anyway. I’m happy with my life even though I’m sure you’ll think it’s a bit basic with no luxuries and no riches. I can’t remember the last time I saw someone want for anything, and civil unrest is not an option anymore – surely that’s a good thing, isn’t it?

I’m glad I had this chance to talk to you – don’t fear the future! But now is when you have to choose which one you want, so 2020, choose with care!

Now where should I go?
